Last year was one of my best years I have had in a long time. This was for two reasons. Firstly I have become qualified in Wedding photography, which in itself is amazing. It has been a long time coming but it has been on my radar for the last couple of years. The second thing was the Photographers bar in The Guild of photographers monthly competition.
The Photographers bar
On February 3rd 2018 I went up to Crewe in Staffordshire to receive an award from the Guild. This is awarded as a unique distinction for photographers who successfully have images assessed by the Guild over the course of a year and attained a score evidencing an exceptional level of professional skill and consistency.
I had to enter 3 images (at least) every month for 8 months. Images graded for ability, storytelling and composition. The top photographs would get Gold but silvers and bronzes were also a good accolade. If you got a bronze or above you got points which went towards The photographers bar which was a total point score of 24. I reached 50 points which not alone gave me the Bar, it also got me a top 20 place in the country. It was one of the best moment in my career going up to pick up my two certificates.
What was great about this competition was that it got me out my comfort zone and try new things. It is very easy just to stay with what you know but like everything you need to keep learning new things. Throughout the months I changed my editing style and how I took the pictures.
I am going to go for the portrait section in 2018 with the odd landscape mixed in. Looking forward to giving it a go.
